Doctor Berdy is a graduate of Duke University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Zoology and Economics, conferred magna cum laude with class honors upon graduation. He attended St. Louis University School of Medicine where he graduated with cum laude honors. Doctor Berdy began his postgraduate training in ophthalmology with a residency at St. Louis University. This was followed by a cornea and external disease fellowship at the Kellogg Eye Center of the University of Michigan and then by a cornea and ocular allergy fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Schepens Eye Research Institute of Harvard University. During that time, Dr. Berdy developed an interest in dry eye disease and the histopathologic effects of preservatives on the ocular surface as assessed by scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, he developed and participated in clinical studies to evaluate immune mediators of inflammation in anterior uveitis and allergic conjunctivitis. Doctor Berdy returned to St. Louis in 1990 and entered private practice. Despite a busy clinical practice, Dr. Berdy has continued to participate in clinical research protocols for new pharmaceutical agents for the treatment of dry eye, allergic conjunctivitis, anterior uveitis and glaucoma. He has served as a principal investigator for at least fifty F.D.A. trials. Additionally, he participated as an investigator in the initial F.D.A. clinical study to evaluate the VISX excimer laser as a tool for correcting myopia and he continues to conduct research protocols for refractive surgery. Dr. Berdy has been the principal or co-author of twenty five publications in the ophthalmic literature and has authored four chapters in ophthalmic textbooks. Doctor Berdy is involved with the ophthalmology teaching program at Washington University where he serves as attending physician in the resident clinic. Additionally, he has presented didactic courses at the annual American Academy of Ophthalmology on topics including the diagnosis and treatment of ocular allergic disorders and management of LASIK complications. He has presented courses as an invited speaker at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the Eastern Allergy Society/Southwest Allergy Forum and the State Societies of Ophthalmology of Wisconsin, Illinois, Kansas, Iowa and Missouri. Dr. Berdy was elected to membership in the prestigious Castroviejo Corneal Society (now known as The Cornea Society) as one of approximately 250 members worldwide. Doctor Berdy’s involvement with organized medicine began while in medical school and has continued to maintain active memberships in local, state and national ophthalmology and medical organizations. Dr. Berdy has served both as President and as a member of the Board of Directors for the Missouri Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. Additionally, he was elected as a Fellow into the American College of Surgeons in 1995, and has participated as an Associate Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology since 1997. Dr. Berdy has been actively involved in cornea and eye banking since his return to St. Louis. He has served as the Director of the St. Louis Division of the Heartland Eye Banks (Missouri Lions Eye Bank) since 1992, and was selected to the Board of Directors of the Heartland Eye Banks Review Board in 1998. Dr. Berdy is an ophthalmologist who strives to achieve excellence in patient care, clinical research and teaching.
