Ranjan P. Malhotra, MD FACS was born in St. Louis, Missouri and was raised in Sunset Hills, Missouri. He attended the Lindbergh School District, where he graduated as salutatorian and with an International Baccalaureate Honors degree in 1989. He then attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City, enrolling in their accelerated 6-year Bachelor’s/Medical Degree Program, a highly competitive program open to a very limited number of students each year, and he graduated with honors in 1995. He completed his internship at St. John’s Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, followed by a move to Dallas, Texas to complete his residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center. After successfully completing residency, Dr. Malhotra chose to further specialize in Cornea/External Disease and Refractive Surgery. He earned a fellowship position at the Dean McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma City, and he completed this additional training in 2000. He is board-certified in the field of Ophthalmology. Dr. Malhotra returned to his hometown of St. Louis in 2000, when he joined Ophthalmology Associates in a partnership with Dr. Gregg Berdy. Since returning to Missouri, Dr. Malhotra has expanded his practice into a successful and patient-oriented setting that strives to provide the highest level of eye care available. To this end, Dr. Malhotra has been at the forefront of acquiring the latest in ophthalmic technologies for the office, including an Ocular Blood Flow analysis, Pattern ElectroRetinoGram (PERG) and a Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) all of which help to detect early glaucoma and macular degeneration. In addition, Dr. Malhotra participates in and is the primary investigator for many FDA trials for medications used in the treatment of glaucoma, dry eye, conjunctivitis, allergy, and bacterial/viral infections. Because of his front-line experience with medication development, Dr. Malhotra is invited to give continuing education lectures to his peers across the country and at many professional meetings.
In addition to his primary practice, Dr. Malhotra is involved in the education of residents at Washington University as well at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in St. Louis. He has satellite offices in Sullivan and St. Peter’s, Missouri. He served as a board member for the Missouri Society of Eye Physicians and for the St. Louis Chapter of the Indian Medical Council/ American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin. Dr. Malhotra is involved in charitable causes as well. Along with his parents, wife, and brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Malhotra has established the Malhotra Scholarship for Academic Excellence, the largest endowed scholarship the university has received to date. Dr. Malhotra and his wife were also significant contributors to establishing a permanent building for the Bal-Vihar Center for Indian Cultural Education in St. Louis. Personally, Dr. Malhotra is married to Dr. Kristen Malhotra, whom he’s known since middle school and was his high school sweetheart. She has a Ph.D. in Neuropsychology from Washington University, but she has chosen to remain at home to raise their three children. Dr. Malhotra is often confused with his brother, Dr. Raman Malhotra, a neurologist and sleep specialist at St. Louis University. Raman’s wife, Dr. Shalini Paruthi, is a pediatric sleep specialist also at SLU. In his free time, Dr. Malhotra’s favorite activity is traveling with his family. He also enjoys exercising, golf, and the study of wine.
